PART I
THE DIPPITY-DON’T

Because it is a pose that encompasses integrative strength, people have found ways to compensate in effort to make chaturanga easier. However, these compensations are not sustainable and can result in injury. The ball of the shoulder joint is so much larger than the socket in which it lies. For healthy movement patterns, you need to keep the head of the humerus centered in the socket which keeps the shoulders from dipping. Shifting forward often dips the humerus toward the floor and out of the centered position. Watch the video to see how I do chaturanga (and how not to do it)! Send me your questions and videos using the hashtag #stoptheshift on Instagram and I will look at your form! Tomorrow, I go into more detail about how to do chaturanga while moving in a yoga class.

PART II
“JUMP BACK AND LOWER”

How do you move in and out of chaturanga in a vinyasa sequence? I’m not a fan of hopping directly back into chaturanga. Watch today’s video to learn why. It is a very challenging move for most people to do because the shoulders are vulnerable if you are landing with your elbows bent. To do it safely, EVERYTHING must be activated and ready, which I’ve only seen a handful people do successfully. Today I’m showing you how to do it safer and more effectively. Check back tomorrow for some drills to help you get stronger and set the neural mapping to navigate this pose with more success. And keep your questions and videos coming! Use the hashtag #stoptheshift on Instagram and I’ll take a look at your form 😍

PART III
CHATURANGA DRILLS

In this final part of the series, I’m showing you how to develop strength for chaturanga with specific drills. These drills don’t just build strength, they also set the good neural mapping in the brain so that when you do a chaturanga, you maintain a solid, sustainable form. Try out these drills for chaturanga and keep your questions and videos coming on Instagram using the hashtag #stoptheshift.
